A hedgehog makes an ideal simulator character. It is small, it is spiky, and it has a life that explains itself: find food, avoid danger, find a mate. We did not have to invent much — we just had to hand all of it to the player.
The road
The game takes your hedgehog through changing places. It opens in green forest, then moves on to fields, city streets and military tunnels. Each setting rewrites the rules: what was a matter of stepping around tree roots becomes something else entirely once there is traffic involved.
You collect treats along the way. They are not decoration — the game’s whole economy runs on them.
Family
This is what brings people back. Beyond the running and the obstacles there is a separate strand: find your match among the other hedgehogs, settle down, raise hoglets. We worked to keep it from feeling like a checkbox on a feature list.
Outfits
Collected coins go into upgrading the hedgehog and dressing it. Some players work through the game for the stats, others to put their hedgehog in something ridiculous. We are happy with both.
